Ballarat will soon have its own Repair Cafe where community members meet to share skills and fix items that would otherwise go to landfill.

Ballarat Tech School will host the Ballarat Repair Cafe once a month, with the first cafe session expected in late August. .

“It suits the requirements of the Repair Cafe and aligns well with the educational aspects of sharing repair knowledge,” said Ballarat Repair Cafe organiser Mary Duff.

The cafe will run an information and welcome session for community members with repair skills and those who can volunteer in non-repair roles on June 26 at Ballarat Tech School.

Repair Cafe is a worldwide movement where volunteer fixers share their skills with those who bring in broken items – a relatively simple idea that could have drastic environmental impact.

Ballarat Tech School associate director Sofia Fiusco said the repair cafe concept was a good fit for the ethos of the school.

An emphasis on sustainability, resources, problem solving and an understanding of fixing items is an important part of how the

Tech School works with students.

“We notice here when we have students in programs who have an understanding of how things work it increases their ability to innovate and design,” she said.

“The Repair Cafe gives another opportunity for young people to connect in with their family and friends and create that sense of sustainability and a fixing model that will be important into the future.”

The Ballarat Repair Cafe is auspiced by BREAZE and is supported by Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group’s Can Do Communities program.

The information session will run from 5.30pm on Wednesday June 26 at Ballarat Tech School. Contact for more information or visit Ballarat Repair Cafe on Facebook.
